MAREN brings together the participants in cross-sector collaboration to deal with the barriers we face in the maritime energy transition. The maritime sector accounts for significant emissions, and conversion from petroleum-based fuel to emission-free energy carriers will require new value chains leading to new value creation.
At the same time, great uncertainty related to the choice of fuel type, energy carrier, technology, and lack of market maturity contributes to reducing the pace of phasing in renewable energy and zero-emission technology.
Therefore, central players, including shipowners, ports, shipyards, technology suppliers, energy companies, and R&D institutions, need more knowledge and coordinated measures to increase the pace of the energy transition and lay a foundation for new commercial activity.
Three tools for the maritime energy transition
MAREN promotes knowledge building, project involvement, matchmaking, and partnership development through gatherings and meeting places. The network will identify needs and opportunities for new solutions and mobilize industry, policymakers, and other players to develop technology, systems, and business models for maritime energy supply.
Towards 2024, the project will develop three specific deliverables for the maritime sector that can be used to accelerate the maritime green transition:
- The Nordic maritime energy program shall spread new knowledge and promote innovations within sustainable maritime energy.
- The Nordic strategy for maritime energy transition must be developed together with leading actors and stakeholders. The strategy will outline how Nordic knowledge hubs will be established and developed into concrete innovation projects and collaboration in the region in the coming years.
- The Nordic Digital platform for cross-industry innovation and collaboration will offer a digital arena to create new partnerships and act as a project generator throughout the Nordics.
The project partners in MAREN represent five Nordic countries and more than 500 members.
