The Elmar Project
The Elmar project aims to identify challenges related to the electrification of maritime transport and to make the development, operation and use of shore power and charging infrastructure more attractive.
Norway has a world-leading maritime cluster and is the fifth largest shipping nation globally, with around 6% of the world’s fleet measured by value.
Elmar will strengthen the understanding of how the development of shore power and charging facilities for maritime transport impacts the local power grid and help overcome technical barriers.
The project is divided into the following five sub-projects:
integrated energy systems
component stresses
new business models
case studies
innovation and knowledge development
Elmar will make an important contribution to achieving international goals for reducing emissions from maritime transport and increasing the potential for local value creation.
Project duration: April 2020 to March 2023, with a total budget of NOK 13 million.
Partners
Trondheim Port Authority is the project owner, and RENERGY participates together with SINTEF and a number of other ports, grid companies, energy companies and shipping companies.
The innovation project is supported by the Research Council of Norway.
