"articleBody" : "We need more zero emission ships on the water, said Thomas Bjørdal at Hyvolution Paris, during a roundtable on “H₂ for Shipping: the Rise of e-Methanol, Ammonia and LH₂”, moderated by the Managing Director for Europe & IMO, Felicia Mester. RENERGY is coordinating NORHyWAY and has been involved in several of the first hydrogen production initiatives in Norway. Madadh MacLaine (Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and Sébastien Zimmer (Sia) took us through an update on the realised vessels and production capacity, where Norwegian maritime sector has significant role. The first upscaled production projects are under construction or reached FID, and our focus on the roundtable was how we must speed up the market development. The pilots as presented by Paolo Guglia (FINCANTIERI) and Taku Hasegawa (Kawasaki Gas Turbine Europe GmbH) are important milestones, but we need to move from one-off vessels to fleets. That will unleash a more predictable demand at much higher volumes than the piloting phase we have been in for too long. This will make it financially feasible to invest in large-scale production and bunkering sites for hydrogen or derivates such as ammonia and e-methanol that can compete with fossil alternatives. Some key take aways perfectly summed up by Methanol Institute: Closing the cost gap through tools like contracts for difference. 💶 Long-term certainty and predictability to unlock investment. 🏛️ Strong public support, beyond pilot projects. ⛓️ Better integration of value chains, across fuels, regions and sectors. 🤝 Breaking down silos and ensuring shared ownership of the transition — from policymakers to international bodies.",

"articleBody" : "Publisert 03/03/2025 Trondheim is becoming a central hub for Europe’s efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s energy sector. Cluster Manager at RENERGY, Thomas Bjørdal The energy cluster RENERGY has been appointed by the EU to lead the project “SUNRISE” – an initiative to secure stable electricity supply in war-torn Ukraine. An important recognition for Norwegian energy technology RENERGY succeeded in competition with 26 other actors to lead the EU–Ukraine Cluster Partnership Programme. The project aims to help Ukrainian power companies maintain energy supply despite repeated attacks on infrastructure. – This is an important confirmation of the level of Norwegian energy technology, and of Trondheim as a technology capital. We will contribute with both urgent solutions and lay the foundation for a robust energy system for the future, says Thomas Bjørdal, Head of RENERGY. International cooperation for robust energy supply The project brings together partners from Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Ukraine. Norwegian stakeholders such as the Norwegian–Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce (NUCC), Innovation Norway, Fornybar Norge and REN will also contribute. Solar panel from Ukraine with bullet holes. One of the most relevant measures is the delivery of battery systems that can secure local power supply in crisis-hit areas. Ukraine’s energy system has been severely affected by the war, and improvised solutions have been necessary to keep the grid running. – We will quickly identify and develop technological solutions that reduce vulnerability and secure electricity supply even under attack. We hope to have the first solutions in place already this winter, says Bjørdal. Energy security as a key to business development Ken Flydalen and Syver Rønningen have just returned from Porto, where RENERGY held the kickoff for the EU-UA SUNRISE project, which aims to ensure a more stable and robust electricity supply in Ukraine. – Electricity supply is the very foundation for both reconstruction and business development. When working with Ukrainian actors, we see that solutions must be both immediate and long-term – battery storage, hybrid grids and flexible energy systems can make a real difference, says Flydalen. Knowledge transferable to Norway The experiences from working in Ukraine will also be valuable for Norway. Robust energy supply is becoming increasingly important, and the solutions developed through SUNRISE can help strengthen Norwegian preparedness and energy security. Project manager at RENERGY, Ken Flydalen – We gain unique insights into how we can strengthen Norwegian solutions for the future. At the same time, the project gives perspective on what a real energy crisis means. In Ukraine, cities the size of Trondheim are without power for days. This puts the Norwegian debate on electricity prices into a new light, concludes Bjørdal. The project is already underway, and RENERGY looks forward to working closely with partners in Europe and Ukraine to deliver innovative solutions that can make a difference in a very demanding situation. "articleBody" : "Strengthened Nordic defence and industrial cooperation Lars Bugge Aarset|18. juni 2025 How Can Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Become an Integrated Part of Future Nordic Defence Capabilities? That was one of several questions explored when representatives from Trøndelag visited key stakeholders in Jämtland and Östersund in June. The event was carried out in cooperation between NORDSEC, IUC Jämtland Härjedalen, Samling Näringsliv, and the Værnes Region Chamber of Commerce, bringing together participants from the defence sector, industry, and academia. Through company visits, meetings with authorities, and workshops, a foundation was laid for closer cross-border cooperation at a time when the Nordic countries must stand stronger together to meet new security policy challenges. Mid-Nordic region: A strategic axis in NATO A key theme during the gathering was the increased strategic importance of the Trondheim–Östersund axis, particularly in light of Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO. The region will play a crucial role in logistics and preparedness—not least in securing the defence of Finland and the Baltics. This creates new demands on industry, infrastructure, and cross-border collaboration. At the same time, it opens opportunities for Nordic suppliers and technology environments that can provide solutions to a common defence. – We need to rethink how Nordic regions work together industrially and in defence. The Mid-Nordic region has an important role to play here,” said Ebbe Deraas, Cluster Manager at NORDSEC. Micael Ågren Berner, Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). Photo: Tevje Ravn Eggan / NORDSEC FMV and SAAB: Seeking New Partners The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), represented by Micael Ågren Berner, shared insights on how the Swedish state is working to strengthen the defence industry and invite more suppliers. With over 800 ongoing projects and orders worth SEK 120 billion, FMV is at the centre of Sweden’s new defence industry strategy. SAAB showcased its wide industrial segment and significant activity in Östersund, pointing to the need for more subcontractors also outside Sweden. – We see opportunities for Norwegian suppliers within the Swedish system, particularly in niche technology, innovation, and robust solutions, said Deraas. Technology and sustainability at the forefront Victoria Alfredsson from Lundstams demonstrated how the company uses artificial intelligence in waste sorting. Having worked as an environmental advisor at the company for ten years, she guided participants through the facility and explained how new technology enables more precise and efficient resource utilization. At the same time, Jämtkraft and RENERGY presented energy challenges and cybersecurity as shared industrial concerns. While surplus power and green production create opportunities, vulnerability to digital threats requires new preparedness and collaboration. Thomas Bjørdal, Cluster Manager at RENERGY. Photo: Tevje Ravn Eggan / NORDSEC Business across borders Several Swedish industrial companies, such as Persson Invest and Wist Last, shared concrete examples of cross-border cooperation, from joint IT structures and leadership training to development projects with Volvo on autonomous vehicles. Opportunities for closer cooperation between academic institutions such as NTNU and Mid Sweden University were also highlighted, particularly within technology and preparedness. From left: Pontus Sandell (IUC Jämtland Härjedalen), Jenny Grip (Samling Näringsliv), Jon Uthus (Værnes Region Chamber of Commerce), and Ebbe Deraas (Cluster Manager NORDSEC). Photo: Tevje Ravn Eggan / NORDSEC Collaboration must become concrete In panel discussions and conversations, participants called for clear projects and joint platforms to turn intentions into action. Jan Marius Reppe from RITEK highlighted how deliveries to the defence sector also strengthen society’s overall preparedness. One goal is to build a joint platform for project development and positioning toward the EU and other international partners. – A big thank you to Jon Uthus and the Værnes Region Chamber of Commerce for an excellent event,” said Tevje Ravn Eggan, Project Manager at NORDSEC. "articleBody" : "The ZeroKyst project’s final gathering during Aqua Nor 2025 was strong proof that the transition to zero emissions in fisheries and aquaculture is no longer just a vision, but a reality in operation. Randi Lervik (Lofotkraft), Thomas Bjørdal (RENERGY), Nina Thomsen (SINTEF), and Erik Ianssen (Selfa Arctic) welcomed participants to ZeroKyst’s closing seminar at Aqua Nor. Cluster work in practice As the initiator of the ZeroKyst consortium, RENERGY has played a key role in bringing together actors from across the entire value chain. The idea emerged from the experiences with Karoline 1, the first electric fishing vessel, and through discussions with Erik Ianssen at Selfa about hydrogen as a propulsion solution. When the opportunity arose with the Green Platform program, RENERGY took the initiative to sketch out the first concept on a whiteboard: a model covering the entire coastline, showing how a market for low- and zero-emission solutions in fisheries and aquaculture could be developed. The first sketch of ZeroKyst This sketch became the foundation for building the consortium. RENERGY structured the work, organized the legal agreements, and allocated the work packages together with Selfa, which held overall project responsibility. The funding was distributed among the partners, and SINTEF was brought in with a dedicated research project closely linked to the physical development work. The effort was not only technical but also a motivational project: to prove to partners and fishermen what they could gain by taking part in such an extensive undertaking. ZeroKyst is therefore a classic example of cluster work in practice, where RENERGY’s role as a facilitator has been crucial in getting a large and complex project off the ground. Strong participation at Aqua Nor At Aqua Nor, ZeroKyst gathered a full house for a technical breakfast. Project manager Erik Ianssen opened by emphasizing that although the project is now formally coming to an end, this is only the beginning of the work on zero-emission vessels. The gathering showcased results from across the project: Plug Lofoten reported more than 100 GWh of shore power delivered, equivalent to 25,000 tons of diesel saved. SINTEF Energy presented laboratory tests of charging connectors in maritime environments, while SINTEF Industry demonstrated how operational patterns affect the lifespan of fuel cells. In addition, SINTEF presented analyses of energy use in twelve ports in Lofoten, highlighting the need for both hydrogen and grid adaptation in coastal communities. Karoline 2, a technology demonstrator A highlight of the gathering was the launch of Karoline 2, the world’s first electric Danish seiner. Built by Selfa Arctic, the vessel is prepared for hydrogen and serves as both a technology demonstrator and a learning platform for the entire industry. Although regulatory challenges and a lack of infrastructure are still slowing hydrogen solutions, the vessel marks an important step forward in the development of climate-friendly fishing vessels. Project manager Erik Ianssen presented the new fishing vessel Karoline 2, which is prepared for both battery and hydrogen propulsion. Industry, policy instruments, and politics Several of the partners demonstrated how electrification and hybridization are already delivering benefits in operations and working environments. Enova presented figures showing that the number of battery-powered vessels worldwide has increased from 82 to more than 1,000, with one third having received support through Enova. From the Green Shipping Programme, schemes were highlighted that can help reduce the cost gap between fossil and green fuels, while the Directorate of Fisheries announced that the government will introduce stricter climate requirements for service vessels in aquaculture as early as 2025. The gathering concluded with a political debate between Lars Haltbrekken (SV) and Henrik Kierulf (H), both of whom emphasized that a combination of regulations and incentives is necessary to accelerate the energy transition. Henrik Kierulf (Second Candidate, Sør-Trøndelag Conservative Party) and Lars Haltbrekken (Deputy Leader, Socialist Left Party). A necessary recognition ZeroKyst has also demonstrated how challenging it is to drive radical green innovation when regulations and approval processes fail to keep pace. The project could have been larger and progressed faster if it had not faced so much regulatory resistance. The bureaucracy is too heavy, it slows progress, and it moves too slowly. This makes RENERGY’s work all the more important. Our role is to build consortia like ZeroKyst and ensure that projects succeed in cutting emissions even when the road ahead is difficult. ZeroKyst is coming to an end, but the journey toward zero emissions in fisheries and aquaculture continues. We carry the lessons and experiences from the project into new consortia and continue working to accelerate and secure a lasting green technology shift.",

"articleBody" : "Av Syver Lie Rønningen/RENERGY Photo: Syver Lie Rønningen/RENERGY How can Norway strengthen preparedness when the power grid, water supply, and other critical infrastructure become targets in war? RENERGY invited a Ukrainian expert to provide insight into how Ukraine is handling this challenge in the midst of a brutal conflict. A New Type of Warfare Strikes at Society’s Vital Functions In the session “The Power Lines of War – Experiences from Ukraine”, Maksym Karpash, Vice Rector at King Danylo University and expert on energy and reconstruction, shared how hospitals, schools, and grid companies in Ukraine plan and operate under constant uncertainty. The energy system is subjected to targeted attacks in a hybrid warfare that places civilian infrastructure on the front line. ‎- When the war broke out, there was panic. We were not mentally or technologically prepared for war. When the Russians began attacking energy infrastructure in the fall of 2022, blackouts became common. In the beginning, it was very frightening to be without power and communication, said Maksym Karpash. Karpash further shared experiences of what it means to build and operate critical infrastructure during war, and how local communities, contractors, and engineers work purposefully to build resilience day by day. After the session, RENERGY convened a meeting where, among others, Minister of Digitalisation and Public Governance Karianne Tung, Tensio, NTE, and FFI discussed solutions and cooperation between Norwegian and Ukrainian actors in energy, digitalisation, and infrastructure. Photo: Syver Lie Rønningen/RENERGY Key lessons for Norway and Norwegian preparedness Moderator Sigbjørn Albertsen from the Norwegian-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce led the conversation, which made clear how Norway can learn from Ukraine’s experiences to strengthen its own preparedness and resilience. Thomas Bjørdal from RENERGY emphasized the importance of this knowledge: – Ukraine shows us how critical infrastructure becomes a central battlefield in modern warfare. It is crucial that we take their experiences with us to strengthen Norway’s preparedness and resilience. Minister of Digitalisation and Public Governance Karianne Tung. Photo: Syver Lie Rønningen/RENERGY Ebbe Deraas, head of the NORDSEC Defence and Security Cluster, pointed out that these insights offer a unique perspective on how societies can organize and respond when vital systems come under pressure: – It’s about building robust and flexible solutions—something both businesses and public actors must take seriously, he said. The session provided a rare insight into how war affects the most fundamental functions of society, and why finding smarter and more robust solutions for the future is a shared challenge. ‎- It hasn’t been straightforward to bring a witness from Ukraine here, even though we lead an EU project with a Ukrainian partner and collaborate closely with the Chamber of Commerce and others on the ground. We are grateful and humbled that Maksym prioritizes coming here to share his experience as a researcher, expert, and ordinary human being, said Thomas Bjørdal in his introduction to the event, held in a full Steinkjer Community Hall.",

"articleBody" : "Publisert 17/01/2025 F-35 refuels with sustainable fuel at Ørland. Photo: RENERGY For the first time, Norwegian F-35 fighter jets have flown with 40% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) in the tank. This marks an important milestone for the Armed Forces, which are taking active steps to reduce emissions and promote sustainable solutions. SAF is produced from biogas, hydrogen or methanol, with added non-fossil carbon to give it the same properties as fossil fuel – but with a significantly lower carbon footprint. It is a key solution for reducing emissions in aviation. The Norwegian Armed Forces are among the few military actors globally to implement SAF in operational use. Strengthening preparedness and industry This initiative may help strengthen Norway’s national preparedness by stimulating local production of sustainable fuel. At the same time, it lays the foundation for a future-oriented industry, creating jobs and increasing value creation in the country. Defense leaders and politicians gathered at Ørland. From left: Chief of the Air Force, Øivind Gunnerud; Minister of Defense, Bjørn Arild Gram; Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen; and Director of the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency, Gro Jære. Photo: RENERGY Sustainability and preparedness – The Armed Forces have exactly the volume and long-term demand for SAF needed to trigger investments in large-scale production facilities, says RENERGY Cluster Manager, Thomas Bjørdal. – This will ensure supply security, a defense sector with reduced emissions, and the Armed Forces as a driver and enabler of emission cuts in civil aviation, shipping and industry, he adds. The Chief of the Air Force, Major General Rolf Folland, emphasizes that this is a milestone combining the need for sustainability with the requirement for preparedness. – Robust national fuel production will give us a strategic advantage, he says. The Armed Forces’ initiative shows how technological innovation and national climate goals can go hand in hand with security needs. – The decisiveness shown by the Air Force today is exactly what we need more of. If the procurement process for SAF is made equally decisive, we will have a measure that can scale, create significant ripple effects, and deliver real emission reductions, concludes Bjørdal.",
