The Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII) aims to promote energy from renewable sources by creating a favourable regulatory and investment framework that helps accelerate emissions reduction and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It specifically mandates the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) in transport and industry.
In the transport sector, RED III saw the increase of the overall target for renewables from 14% to 29% in energy terms, more than doubling the ambition from the RED II of 2018.
But many Member States are still struggling with finding the right formula for implementation: this session will bring together renowned experts and decision makers from the European institutions, national authorities as well as representatives from the most impacted companies to have a constructive and stimulating discussion on what potential options countries currently have on the table and which factors should be taken into account when designing national implementation mechanisms. Which are the best practices to be promoted and the pitfalls to be avoided?
